Crime of the Century

Oh boy where do I begin.
Based on your reflections, and on a scale of 1 to 10 (ten being optimal wellbeing), where do you rate your A-physical wellbeing, B-spiritual well-being, C-psychological well-being? Why?

A) I would have to rank my physical well-being at about a 7 mostly due to the fact that while I am physically active in martial arts my weight is still more than it should be and I have a terrible sweet tooth that I sometimes find hard to control. My physical health isn't too bad but I do have issues with stress headaches.
B) My spriritual well-being would have to be around a 6 because I really have a hard time even understanding what spiritual well-being is so if I don't understand it well then how can I develop it adequately. I do use meditation but I'm not even sure if that applies.
C) Psychological well-being, this I would rank at about a 7-8.  I have never suffered from any psychological problems but I will say that I do have plenty of stress in my life that really can take me down on occasion.

Develop a goal for yourself in each area (physical, spiritual, psychological).

Physical- my goal to improve my physical well-being would have to start with increasing my physical activity by being more consistent with my martial arts training and taking walks.
Spiritual- I'm not sure how to improve this...I have a very hard time with this aspect of life.
Psychological- reduce stress!!! That's first and foremost! I need to find better ways to unwind and calm my mind so I can deal with all of lifes craziness. I think that my physical goal will do a lot to help with this as well as finding some time for myself.

What activities or exercise can you implement in your life to assist in moving toward each goal?

Some things I can do to achieve my goals would be to maybe find a moment to incorporate yoga into my day. This would increase my physical fitness as well as to help me to clear my mind and increase my sense of peacefulness.  I think that increasing my martial arts training will help too, it works my body as well as my mind.

  1. Complete the relaxation exercise The Crime of the Century. To hear this exercise, click here. Describe your experience. (What it beneficial? Frustrating? etc.)
I did not even make it through this exercise.  I would start really relaxing and getting into the exercise and then would start to doze off, then startling awake only to have to try to relax again. Kind of frustrating

  1. Hello!
I can totally relate to the need of reducing stress! It seems the older I get, the more stress life throws my way. I took a stress management class last term and one helpful hint I learned was to create a new perspective on the stressful situation at hand. "Things" could always be worse and sometimes we do not look at it that way, I have started to focus my attention on all the things I am blessed with instead of filling my head with those stressful situations in life. I have also learned the importance of communication. Much of the stress in my life was due to lack of communication or miscommunication.
I think it is great you have set a goal to increase your physical activity! Exercise in and of itself is a great stress reliever so you can benefit more ways than one there!!
Good luck and keep up the good work!!

    1. Joncie,
I was supposed to take the stress management class this term but the seminar wouldn't work for my schedule so I changed it. I do typically try to look at life with a positive outlook but these days the stress has been really overtaking me. I think that I will do best by working in some walking and doing so alone...double duty, alone time and exercise...we will see.

  2. Hello,

Well I totally agree with you when it comes time to engage in these relaxation activities I totally start to doze off and then Im done. As for you making it a goal for your physical well being that you want to do martial arts on a consistent basis and take walks maybe you should make a todo list with those activities on a daily basis. I love to work out but I also do like to eat so I try to push myself a bit harder when i work out so that I can keep eating the fun stuff. As for reducing stress that is major and meditation is a good way to do that and so is yoga, try it out sometime I did and I loved it.

  3. I agree with Shana--yoga is fun! I started doing yoga little over a year ago and it not only made me strong physically, but I learned how to control my thoughts better. I was very stressed but most of the things that I was stressing about were totally unnecessary. Try to prioritize your life and in doing so you will simplify it and reduce stress! Don't fret about the spiritual health. I think that the word "spiritual" turns a lot of people off because they may not know exactly what it is talking about. I view it as your "world view", your morals and what you believe to be valuable. Good luck in reaching all your goals!

  4. Good luck with the yoga! I thought I would really love it but I just found it too boring.

With the meditation exercise, why not let yourself fall asleep? This is not wrong to fall asleep during the relaxation exercise. That means you were relaxed! :)

  5. Marilyn,

Thanks for your honesty in your answers. I just have a couple of questions.

    1) How do you determine your ideal weight?
    2) How would you go about defining "spirituality?" Hopefully this first step will help you achieve spiritual well-being. I define spirituality as "the divine in me, sees the divine in you." It's got nothing to do with religion but has everything to do with my "spirit" connecting with the universe. Maybe you can ask your classmates to define what spirituality is for them to sort of "jump start" you.
    3) What is your definition of "psychological problems"? Do you think your stress headaches might be the result of something psychological?

When I first started doing guided meditation, I used to fall asleep too but then it got easier. I don't do it if I'm sleepy because I WILL fall asleep! And like Christanlane says, it's okay to fall asleep.

Keep up the good work. Good luck and good skill in achieving your goals.

  6. Hello,

I related to some of your comments on your post, in regards to the psychological well-being you are right strss definately falls into that category and when our body is stressed as we know (from this class) so is our mind. The fact that you fell asleep during the meditation it is a really good sign that you were able to relax, if it not have been because I have more homework to complete I would have fallen asleep myself. I thought it was an excellent meditation.

    Have a great week!

  7. Shana,
I have never really managed to enjoy yoga, not enough movment to engage me I guess. That's why I took to martial arts, it pretty much covers cardio, strength training and flexibility all at once. There have just been some roadblocks to me getting to the dojo to train lately although I suppose giving yoga another go wouldn't be a bad idea...just have to find a way to do it where I don't bore myself...lol.
