Unit 8 My favorite practices

Sitting here on the verge of unit 9 I am struck by how fascinating this course has been. I have learned so much and yet feel as if I have not been able to dedicate myself to this course the way I would have liked, however, I can continue to work on my meditations, vizualizations and other practices and improve upon all that I have learned. This week for Unit 8 we are to do the following...

Review the exercises and practice sessions you have completed in this course. (Loving Kindness, Subtle mind, Visualization, meditation etc.) Choose two practices that you have determined to be most beneficial. How can you implement these practices in your personal life to foster “mental fitness”? Provide specific examples.

All of the practices that we encountered during this term were quite beneficial but I think the ones that I found gave me the biggest benefit were the subtle mind exercise and meditation. The question is always worded as "how can you implement these practices in your personal life" but I really think that for the purpose of this course it should be stated "how have you implemented these practices in your personal life". I personally want to become more mentally fit and haved begun the process of implementing these practices, especially meditation into my daily routines. By spending just a little of each day meditating and just shutting down the mind and body, it can foster an improvement n my mental as well as my physical wellness. My mornings are crazy so a quick meditation is helpful in gearing up for the day then when things get quiet, the subtle mind exercise is what I find useful to revamp my day. I meditate again as I am working to wind down for the night, becoming relaxed and calm so that sleep may find me. I am not great at it but I am improving.

  1. Hi Marlyn,

I feel the same way. Just as about class is about to come to an end everything is making connections and I am begining to get the hang of our exercises. I do plan to keep practicing the techniques that were taught in our class.

The mornings for me are way to busy and hectic right now, especially, now since school has just started I am in full load of bus duty, Kindergarten duty, book fairs, and that is just to name a few. I think I would probably approach the techniques in the evening after the day has settled down some.

  2. Hello Marlyn,
I think we are in the same boat in terms of how this class has flown by and not quite being able to dedicate as much time as we would like. There is so much to take in, in this class that sometimes it gets overwhelming. I think taking a few minutes each day is a good way to implement these practices into our lives. I find it great that you try to meditate everyday!Relaxing the mind is such a positive and beneficial tool!

  3. Marlyn,

This clas has been very beneficial in enabling us to engage in practices that allow us to gain a sense of clarity and allow us to relax and relate in a sense. I plan to continue to use these practices as well because they have allowed me to relieve stress and to not fret over everything. The day goes by smoother and I feel better after I have done one of the exercises. Great blog!

  4. Marlyn,
I too feel that mediation is a powerful way to calm and clear our minds. I already use meditation to combat stress and anxiety associated with my OCD and life in general. It has really helped me to have this to turn to when I feel that my mind is chaotic or under stress. Hopefully you are able to use some of the techniques we learned in this course to better your mental fitness as well :)

    Good luck and great post!

  5. Marlyn,

I totally agree that this class has flown by. i feel lilke we have just touched on the surface of something that we could spend much more time on to help us all. I belief we have had only such a brief time to decide and commit to changing our behaviors to more positive ones and to embrace practices that will ultimately enhance our lives permanently. Good luck to all of us who will try to make sucha committment to great change!

  6. I am inspired that eventhough you are very busy you are still finding or making time to meditate. I haven't put as much effort into learning to meditate as I would have liked but like you said I have the tools to learn and practice it when the time is right. I need to make a concious effort to just sit down and do it even if it's just 10 minutes before bed.

  8. Hi Marlyn,

I agree with you this was a wonderful course to take and so much has been learned. I also wish I could have dedicated so much more time to the different activities, but it is so hard when you have so many things to juggle with; other courses, family , work and so on. But i myself have stayes with the meditation practices I will definately will continue becasue this couurse has shown me that taking 20 minutes just for me can transform my health and my life.
